Shirley Chisholm State Park

East New York, NY | MVVA, INC.

2021

BUDGET: $54M

Located in Jamaica Bay, Shirley Chisholm State Park transformed 407 acres of former landfill into New York City’s largest state park, reconnecting the historically underserved neighborhood of East New York to the waterfront through expansive ecological restoration and recreation amenities. Completed in phases between 2019 and 2021, the park features ten miles of gravel trails winding through native grasslands, wildflower meadows, and restored coastal habitats, with elevated views stretching from the Manhattan skyline to the Atlantic Ocean. Public amenities include welcoming gateways, shoreline access, two repurposed piers, beaches, bike-share stations, gathering spaces, and educational areas, while extensive invasive species management and native planting strengthen long-term coastal resilience and habitat restoration.

MY ROLE: As Project Manager, Designer, and Drafter, I supported all phases of project development from design through construction administration. My responsibilities included day-to-day coordination with clients, consultants, and contractors, design and drawing review, construction oversight, set management, and the production of presentation graphics and visual materials used for client, stakeholder, and public-facing presentations.
