Chilmark House

Chilmark, MA

2019

This residential home renovation on Martha's Vineyard involved a full demolition and redesign of a family’s outdoor spaces around a new house set amid a rural, seaside landscape. The project navigated complex wetland easements and regulatory constraints while reimagining the site with low-maintenance planting strategies, refined circulation, grading improvements, and landscape features that respected the natural character of the surrounding environment while integrating the new modern house architecture. Coordination with local boards and permitting authorities was integral to advancing approvals and maintaining compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

MY ROLE: As Project Manager and Landscape Designer, working solely with Michael Van Valkenburgh, I led all stages of the project from concept design through construction administration. I served as the primary point of contact for the client and coordinated closely with architects, contractors, and permitting agencies to align design intent, technical requirements, and construction execution. Responsibilities included design development, board approval coordination, proposals and budgeting, scheduling, material sourcing, and on-site oversight to ensure seamless project delivery while preserving the integrity of the environmentally sensitive site.
